The Lagos State Government has announced a temporary closure of the Iddo Bridge to facilitate the installation of heavy steel bridge beams as part of ongoing rehabilitation and reconstruction works.
Installation Schedule
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, stated that the installation will occur in two phases: from 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, to 5:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 18; and from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 21. During these periods, the affected section of the bridge will be completely closed to vehicular traffic.
“Consequently, the entire section of Iddo Bridge will be temporarily closed to vehicular movement during the periods stated above to ensure the safe installation of the steel beams on the bridge,” Osiyemi explained. He noted that the work is being carried out by the Federal Ministry of Works as part of efforts to rehabilitate and reconstruct the bridge.
Alternative Routes for Motorists
To ease traffic disruptions, motorists have been advised to use alternative routes. For commuters travelling from Oyingbo and Yaba towards Ijora Olopa, Apapa, and Costain, Osiyemi advised using Funsho Williams Avenue.
Motorists travelling from Marina to Ijora Olopa, Apapa, and Costain were advised to descend the ramp to Iddo-Onigbe, connect through Oyingbo, and continue via Murtala Muhammed Way. Those travelling from Ijora Olopa and Apapa towards Carter Bridge and Marina were advised to use Eko Bridge, connecting through Apapa Road, Murtala Muhammed Way, Iddo-Onigbe, and Carter Bridge.
Appeal for Patience
Osiyemi appealed for patience and cooperation from residents and road users during the temporary closure. “Adequate traffic control measures will be put in place to minimise inconveniences and ensure a smooth flow of traffic during the period.”
Traffic management officials will be deployed to manage vehicular movement and assist motorists throughout the exercise.
