Ogun State Government Announces Palliative Measures for Public Servants

In a significant move to address economic challenges, Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun has approved a comprehensive set of palliative measures for public servants across the state. The initiative, designed to cushion the effects of rising fuel prices and increased cost of living, includes a weekly day off duty and a monthly transport allowance of ₦10,000.

Details of the Palliative Package

The measures will be implemented for a period of three months, commencing in April 2026. According to a statement released by the State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, each eligible worker will observe one day off per week while receiving the special transport allowance during this timeframe.

Onasanya emphasized that the primary objective is to provide relief for workers facing commuting challenges due to recent hikes in fuel prices. He noted that this approach aims to promote improved productivity by fostering a more motivated workforce through reduced transportation burdens.

Exemptions and Implementation

However, the Head of Service clarified that certain categories of workers will be exempted from the weekly day-off arrangement due to the critical nature of their duties. These exemptions include:

  • Medical personnel
  • Judicial staff
  • Teaching and non-teaching staff across all educational levels
  • Security personnel
  • Accounting Officers and Heads of Departments
  • Other officers whose responsibilities require physical presence

Despite these exemptions, affected workers will still benefit from the ₦10,000 transport allowance. Onasanya explained that Accounting Officers in various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) will determine specific days off for eligible workers in a manner that ensures uninterrupted service delivery.

Government Commitment and Worker Response

Describing the intervention as timely and thoughtful, Onasanya commended Governor Abiodun for prioritizing workforce welfare amid prevailing economic challenges. He urged workers to reciprocate the gesture by demonstrating renewed commitment, discipline, and enhanced service delivery in their respective roles.

The palliative measures underscore the state government's commitment to supporting its workforce and maintaining efficiency in public service despite current economic pressures. This initiative represents a strategic approach to balancing employee welfare with operational requirements during a period of financial strain for many households.
