Saudi Arabian authorities have issued a warning about extreme atmospheric conditions during the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage, with temperatures projected to exceed 48 degrees Celsius. As Nigerian pilgrims join over 1.5 million Muslims from around the world in Muna, the authorities are alerting all participants to be mindful of the intense heat, particularly in Muna and Muzdalifah, where thousands are expected to gather for spiritual exercises over the next five days.
Temperature Forecast and Health Advisory
According to the Ministry of Hajj, weather forecasts indicate that temperatures could rise to 50 degrees Celsius during midday if wind activity remains low. The advisory calls on all concerned agencies and Hajj missions to heighten preparedness measures and exercise maximum caution amid the extreme weather conditions expected during the peak of the pilgrimage.
Officials have urged pilgrims to avoid direct exposure to sunlight and refrain from walking during peak daytime hours. Prolonged exposure to intense heat could pose serious health risks, including heat exhaustion and dehydration. The statement further advised pilgrims to remain inside their camps as much as possible to reduce these risks.
Preventive Measures and Sensitization
The authorities have directed Hajj operators to provide awareness teams to intensify sensitization campaigns on preventive health measures. These measures include the use of umbrellas, increased intake of water and other fluids, and strict compliance with health and operational guidelines issued by relevant agencies. Pilgrims are encouraged to follow these guidelines to avoid needless exposure to the harsh conditions.
The health advisory comes as Nigerian pilgrims join over 1.5 million contingents from across the globe in moving to the tent city of Muna for the beginning of the Hajj exercise. About 50,000 Nigerians already settled in Makkah will begin the journey Sunday night after a successful conveyance of all pilgrims from Madinah. The final batch of pilgrims, including those from Zamfara, Kano, Borno, and other states, were dispatched from Madinah, marking the conclusion of the Madinah visitation.
