The Senate has confirmed Dr Muttaqha Darma as Minister of Housing and Urban Development, tasking him with tackling Nigeria's housing crisis, reviving abandoned federal estates, and advancing mortgage and urban planning reforms. The confirmation followed a rigorous screening session where lawmakers highlighted urgent structural failures in the sector.
Confirmation and Mandate
President Bola Tinubu nominated Darma under Section 147(2) of the Constitution. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele moved the motion for confirmation, after which the chamber examined him in detail. Senators outlined key expectations, focusing on abandoned housing estates, weak mortgage penetration, and distortions in the Abuja Master Plan.
Lawmakers' Concerns
Senator Mohammed Monguno described housing as central to economic stability, urging Darma to address the housing deficit and urban pressure. Senator Adams Oshiomhole questioned why pension funds have not improved housing access, calling for collaboration with financial institutions. Senator Babangida Hussaini raised concerns about abandoned federal projects, citing vandalism and poor management.
Darma's Response
Darma acknowledged the housing deficit as a structural challenge, pledging to rehabilitate abandoned estates and improve agency coordination. He promised to work with financial regulators and pension administrators to expand affordable housing finance and home-ownership pathways.
Senate President's Remarks
Senate President Godswill Akpabio urged Darma to translate commitments into measurable outcomes, emphasizing housing's role in national welfare and economic stability.
Outgoing Minister's Handover
Ahmed Dangiwa expressed optimism during the handover, praising stakeholders for collaboration. He welcomed Darma as a seasoned technocrat and urged staff to provide the same support he received. Dangiwa thanked President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve.
