Tinubu Approves Six-Month Extension for Customs Chief Adeniyi

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a final six-month tenure extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, in a move aimed at sustaining ongoing reforms and ensuring a seamless leadership transition within the agency. The extension, which takes effect upon the expiration of Adeniyi's current tenure on August 1, 2026, will keep him in office until February 2027.

Continuity for Modernization Programmes

The decision is expected to provide continuity for key modernization programmes being implemented by the Customs Service, particularly the National Single Window project, a flagship initiative designed to simplify trade processes, improve efficiency at the nation's ports, and enhance revenue collection. The Presidency said the extension will also allow Adeniyi to conclude critical administrative and institutional processes within the Service, including the promotion of eligible senior officers and the retirement of personnel who have either attained the statutory retirement age of 60 years or completed 35 years in service.

Stakeholder Support for Stability

Industry stakeholders have repeatedly highlighted the importance of stability within the Customs Service, noting that ongoing reforms require consistent leadership to achieve their intended objectives. The Service remains one of the country's most strategic agencies, playing a central role in revenue generation, trade facilitation, anti-smuggling operations, and border management.

Since assuming office in June 2023, Adeniyi has overseen several initiatives aimed at modernizing Customs operations, improving efficiency, strengthening stakeholder engagement, and boosting government revenue. His administration has also focused on leveraging technology to improve transparency and reduce bottlenecks in cargo clearance processes.

National Single Window Project

The National Single Window project, one of the major programmes expected to be consolidated during the extension period, seeks to integrate the activities of multiple government agencies involved in international trade into a single digital platform. The initiative is expected to reduce delays, cut business costs, improve ease of doing business, and enhance Nigeria's competitiveness in global trade.

Succession Planning and Retirement Processes

Beyond reform implementation, the additional six months are expected to provide the Nigeria Customs Service Board with sufficient time to manage succession planning and ensure a smooth transfer of leadership when Adeniyi eventually exits office. During the transition period, the Board is expected to oversee the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller while also implementing mandatory retirements in line with public service regulations.

Adeniyi's Career Journey

Adeniyi's journey in the Customs Service spans more than three decades. A graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University, he joined the Service in the late 1980s and steadily climbed the ranks through various operational and administrative positions. He became Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023 before being appointed Comptroller-General by President Tinubu in June 2023.

With the latest extension, Adeniyi is expected to focus on consolidating reforms, strengthening institutional capacity, and laying the groundwork for a smooth transition as the Service continues its drive toward greater efficiency, modernization, and improved service delivery.
