FCT Minister Wike Courts Japanese Support for Accelerated Abuja Development

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has reaffirmed his administration's dedication to enhancing collaboration with the Japanese government to expedite the transformation of Abuja in alignment with its master plan. This commitment was articulated during a courtesy visit by Japanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Suzuki Hideo, and officials from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Abuja.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties for Urban Growth

Wike specifically praised Japan's instrumental role in the development and ongoing review of the Abuja Master Plan, emphasizing its critical importance for the city's long-term sustainable growth. He also acknowledged Japan's significant contributions to Nigeria's education sector, including teacher training programs and support for quality learning infrastructure.

The minister identified agriculture and urban development as priority areas for future cooperation, assuring the Japanese delegation of the FCT Administration's commitment to fostering an enabling environment for a sustainable and productive partnership.

Japan's Ongoing Commitment and Projects

In response, Ambassador Suzuki reaffirmed Japan's steadfast commitment to Nigeria's overall development, highlighting Abuja's central role as the political and administrative capital. He disclosed that Japan is advancing various projects in waste management and industrial development, such as a plastics value chain initiative in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), with a pilot facility scheduled for handover.

The envoy further detailed ongoing efforts through JICA to upgrade the Abuja Master Plan, aimed at improving residents' quality of life and supporting sustainable urban expansion. Ishigame Keiji, Chief Representative of JICA Nigeria Office, outlined the agency's extensive interventions across multiple sectors in the FCT, including water, power, health, agriculture, and education.

Political Realignment in the FCT

In a related political development, former Senate Minority Leader Philip Aduda has declared that the emerging "Rainbow Coalition" under Wike's leadership will mobilize substantial support to secure victory for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections. Aduda made this announcement while receiving key stakeholders from across the FCT Area Councils, who pledged allegiance to his political movement, the "Renewed Hope Ambassadors."

The delegation, which included the FCT ALGON Chairman Danladi Chiya, current and former vice chairmen, executive members, and council leaders, also met with representatives of the All Progressives Congress (APC) national and zonal leadership, formally aligning with the ruling party. Notable attendees included chairmen from Kwali, Kuje, and Bwari Area Councils, along with FCT Public Complaints Commissioner Isyaku Yamawo.

Strategic Defections and Future Implications

This defection marks a significant shift in the FCT political landscape, substantially strengthening the APC's grassroots structure in the territory. Aduda attributed their decision to join the APC to growing confidence in President Tinubu's "Renewed Hope Agenda," noting that recent developments in the FCT have rekindled optimism among residents.

Danladi Chiya, who chairs the Kwali Area Council, described the move as a strategic alignment with the federal government to unlock more development opportunities for the FCT. Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Kuje Area Council Chairman Abdullahi Sabo explained that their aim is to add value to governance and support efforts to improve public welfare, pledging that the new political alignment will be driven by unity, inclusiveness, and merit-based leadership.
