APC Chieftain Praises Tinubu for Sacking Wale Edun

Francis Okoye, the convener of the All Progressives Congress (APC) South-East Coalition, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for removing Wale Edun as Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy. Okoye stated that he had been calling for Edun's removal since 2024 due to perceived underperformance.

New Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele Appointed

President Tinubu appointed Taiwo Oyedele as the new Minister of Finance in a minor cabinet reshuffle. Okoye described Oyedele as a better choice for the office than Edun, noting that the reshuffle was a welcome and necessary change.

Okoye Rates Edun's Performance Below Average

Okoye rated Edun's performance as well below average since he assumed office in 2023. He stated, "It is long expected that he should go and manage his health and family. He has not performed well as a minister."

Wale Edun Breaks Silence After Removal

Following his removal on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, Edun reflected on his tenure as an honour and privilege. He noted that Nigeria's economic growth improved from two per cent to over four per cent during his time as finance minister. He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve.

Severance Pay for Sacked Ministers

According to the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), ministers who left President Tinubu's cabinet are set to receive ₦6,079,200.00 as severance pay. This amount equals 300% of their total salary after a successful tenure. Wale Edun and other ex-ministers qualify under the federal government's clause of completing service successfully.
