ITUC-Africa Urges Dialogue for Middle East Peace

ITUC-Africa Advocates for Diplomatic Solutions to Middle East Crises

The African Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-Africa) has issued a powerful appeal for global leaders to prioritize dialogue and diplomacy in resolving the escalating conflicts in Palestine and across the Middle East. Representing over 18 million workers across 52 African nations, the continental trade body emphasized that achieving justice through fair and consistent international law application is essential for sustainable peace.

Solidarity with Palestine and Humanitarian Concerns

In a statement delivered by General Secretary Joel Odigie, ITUC-Africa expressed unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people amidst the devastating humanitarian crisis. The organization echoed concerns from global trade unions, including HAK-İŞ Turkey, highlighting that "the blockade of Gaza has created an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe, disproportionately affecting workers, women, and children." ITUC-Africa urgently called for an immediate end to the siege and amplified demands for unimpeded humanitarian access to conflict zones.

Broader Regional Impact on Africa

The crisis extends beyond Palestine, with concerning escalations in Lebanon and Iran, particularly around the strategic Strait of Hormuz. ITUC-Africa warned that these developments are already negatively impacting African economies, driving inflation, increasing living costs, and burdening citizens across the continent. Additionally, African migrant workers caught in conflict zones face growing suffering, underscoring the interconnected nature of regional instability.

Drawing from historical experience, Odigie stated, "African workers and peoples have endured systems of exclusion, dispossession, and inequality. We understand the pain of marginalisation, the denial of rights, and the long struggle for dignity and self-determination." This shared history fuels ITUC-Africa's firm stance in solidarity with all affected by injustice in the Middle East.

Call for International Action and Two-State Solution

ITUC-Africa reaffirmed its support for a just and lasting resolution based on the two-state framework, advocating for peaceful coexistence between Israel and Palestine with full respect for Palestinian rights, sovereignty, and self-determination. The organization urged the international community to:

  • Uphold international law consistently without double standards
  • Ensure accountability for violations and protect all civilians
  • Reject selective diplomacy that undermines trust and prolongs conflict
  • Guarantee protection for humanitarian corridors and trapped migrant workers

Pathways to Sustainable Peace

The trade union body emphasized that social dialogue and diplomacy are critical instruments for reconciliation and nation-building. It called for immediate de-escalation across the region to prevent further loss of life and instability, while promoting inclusive dialogue involving workers' organizations, civil society, and all relevant stakeholders. "Peace cannot be achieved without justice, and justice cannot be sustained without dialogue, diplomacy and consensus," ITUC-Africa asserted, highlighting the indispensable role of diplomatic engagement in conflict resolution.
