Kano deepens economic partnership with France, China

In a significant move to boost its development, the Kano State Government has solidified major economic and social partnerships with both France and China. The agreements, finalized on 27 November 2025, are set to enhance the overall well-being of the state's residents through focused collaborations.

Deepening Ties with France on Water and Governance

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf met with the French Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Marc Fonbaustier, at the Government House in Kano. The ambassador led an eight-member delegation to review ongoing projects and explore new areas for cooperation.

The renewed collaboration with France will strengthen the state's National Water Sector Reform Programme. Ambassador Fonbaustier emphasized that the partnership focuses on social impact, institutional efficiency, and sustainable water management rather than just hardware investments. He confirmed France's ongoing support for key water-sector initiatives in Kano and identified transportation as a promising area for future engagement.

"Our cooperation with Kano is solid, and today's discussions opened new opportunities for an expanded partnership," the Ambassador stated.

In response, Governor Yusuf applauded the French Government for its sustained support. He reiterated his commitment to ensuring reliable, accessible, and socially responsive water services for the people of Kano, aligning with national reform objectives.

Expanding Economic Horizons with China

In a separate meeting, Governor Yusuf also received the Deputy Chief of Mission of the People's Republic of China in Nigeria, Hon. Zhou Hongyou. The Chinese official led a delegation on a courtesy visit, recognizing Kano as one of the most important commercial centres in Nigeria and Africa.

Hon. Zhou highlighted that relations between Nigeria and China have remained strong and mutually beneficial for over 60 years, supported by the active presence of more than 100 Chinese companies operating across the country. He confirmed that Kano remains a focal point for future Chinese investment expansion.

Governor Yusuf welcomed the delegation and expressed appreciation for China's longstanding friendship. He acknowledged the contributions of Chinese investors to sectors like construction, commerce, technology, and industrial development. The governor described Kano as a major economic powerhouse and stressed that his administration prioritizes security and creating a conducive environment for international investment.

A Future Built on Strategic Partnerships

These dual partnerships mark a strategic step for Kano State. Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening ties with both governments and their private sectors. He expressed a specific interest in cooperation on communication, business growth, and social development, which are central pillars of his administration's agenda.

The governor emphasized that the people remain at the heart of all policy formulation. The state government is committed to building partnerships that deliver real, tangible benefits to local communities, ensuring that international collaborations translate into improved living standards for the people of Kano.
