In a significant ceremony that underscores deep cultural and diplomatic bonds, Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has been honoured with a prestigious Yoruba chieftaincy title by the Ooni of Ife. The event, held at the ancient palace in Ile-Ife, is being hailed as a strategic move to fortify the longstanding relationship between the two West African powerhouses.
A Title of Unity and Shared Destiny
President Mahama was formally installed as the Aare Atayeto Oodua of the Source by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Babatunde Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, on Tuesday, December 17, 2025. In his address, Mahama framed the honour not merely as a personal accolade but as a cultural bridge designed to strengthen fraternal ties between Ghana and Nigeria. He emphasised that the connection between the nations is profound and inseparable, likening them to twins born of the same mother.
Personal Ties and Political Prophecy
In an emotional speech, President Mahama revealed a deeply personal chapter of his life intertwined with Nigeria. He recounted how, during his father's period of exile, he lived for several years in Nigerian cities including Lagos, Offa, and Kano. He was accompanied by his late stepmother's brother, Sharaf Balogun. Mahama poignantly dedicated the chieftaincy title to his stepmother, Hajia Nusirat Balogun, who hailed from Offa in Kwara State.
He also shared a powerful anecdote about the Ooni's spiritual support during a challenging phase of his political career. "Kabiyesi took me to the palace's most sacred areas and encouraged me to express my deepest desires," Mahama recalled. "After that, he assured me, 'Go, and you will reclaim your seat.' In 2024, to my delight, I was re-elected as President."
