Nigeria Commends UK for Women Peace Security Commitment

The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development (FMWASD) has commended the United Kingdom Government for reaffirming its commitment to advancing the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda in Nigeria through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

UK Reaffirms Support at Nigeria–UK Defence and Security Forum

The commendation, according to a press release signed by Ahmed Lawan Danbazau, Head of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry, followed discussions at the Nigeria–UK Defence and Security Forum. During the forum, the UK reiterated its support for the implementation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 and pledged continued collaboration to strengthen the meaningful participation of women in peacebuilding, conflict prevention, stabilisation, mediation, and post-conflict recovery.

Impact of the SPRING Programme

The Ministry also acknowledged the impact of the UK’s SPRING Programme, describing it as a key initiative supporting inclusive peace and security, strengthening institutions, and empowering women as vital contributors to resilient communities and sustainable peace.

Minister Welcomes Renewed Commitment

Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, welcomed the renewed commitment, describing it as a significant boost to Nigeria’s efforts to fully implement the Women, Peace and Security Agenda. Sulaiman-Ibrahim stated that the implementation of UNSCR 1325 remains critical to ensuring that women are not only protected during conflicts but are also empowered to serve as leaders, negotiators, and decision-makers in peace and security processes.

Federal Government’s Commitment to Partnerships

The Minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to strengthening partnerships with international development partners to promote inclusive governance, reinforce institutional frameworks, and advance sustainable peace through the active participation of women at all levels. She expressed confidence that sustained collaboration between Nigeria and the United Kingdom would accelerate the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda and deliver lasting benefits for women, families, communities, and the nation.
