Nigerian National Among Casualties as Iranian Missiles Strike UAE Territory
The United Arab Emirates has confirmed that a Nigerian citizen was among dozens injured when Iranian ballistic missiles penetrated its air defenses this week, marking a significant escalation in regional hostilities. According to official statements from the UAE Ministry of Defence, the attacks resulted in six fatalities and 122 injuries across multiple nationalities.
Details of the Missile Barrage and Interception Efforts
Since the conflict began on February 28, Iranian forces have launched a total of 262 ballistic missiles toward the UAE in what authorities describe as retaliatory strikes. The UAE's advanced air defence systems successfully intercepted 241 of these projectiles, while 19 landed harmlessly in the sea. However, two missiles managed to breach the defensive perimeter and struck within UAE territory, directly causing the reported casualties.
The ministry provided a detailed breakdown of the affected nationalities, confirming deaths among Emirati, Pakistani, Nepalese, and Bangladeshi citizens. The 122 injured individuals represented a diverse group from 25 countries, including Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Philippines, India, Sri Lanka, and Nigeria, among others. Officials did not specify the exact number of injured from each country, but confirmed Nigerian nationals were among those affected.
Escalating Regional Tensions and UAE Response
The missile attacks come amid heightened tensions between Iran and Gulf states, with Iran alleging that the UAE permitted the United States to launch operations from American military bases located within its borders. The UAE defence ministry stated on Wednesday that its forces continue to intercept additional missiles and drones fired by Iran, emphasizing the nation's readiness to counter any threats and protect its national interests.
"Our air defence units remain on high alert," a ministry spokesperson said. "We have demonstrated our capability to intercept the majority of incoming threats, but these attacks represent a dangerous escalation that has resulted in tragic loss of life and injuries to innocent civilians from many nations."
Nigerians in the Region Appeal for Government Assistance
Meanwhile, Nigerians stranded across several Gulf countries have urgently appealed to the Federal Government of Nigeria to prepare repatriation flights in case the security situation deteriorates further. Countries such as Qatar, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia are popular destinations for Nigerian travelers, workers, and transit passengers, though it remains unclear exactly how many Nigerians are currently trapped in Iran or other Middle Eastern nations affected by the ongoing conflict.
The Nigerian government has yet to issue an official statement regarding the injured national or contingency plans for citizens in the region. Community leaders among the Nigerian diaspora have expressed concern about the safety of their compatriots and called for immediate diplomatic action to ensure their protection and potential evacuation if necessary.
This incident represents one of the most serious escalations in the Middle East conflict to directly affect Nigerian citizens abroad, highlighting the global ramifications of regional hostilities and the vulnerability of international communities caught in crossfire.
