Nigerians Urged to Defend Sovereignty Against Foreign Interference

Professor of History and International Studies at the University of Ilesa, Osun State, Williams Fawole, has called on Nigerians to prioritize national unity and defend the country's sovereignty against foreign interference and exploitation. He made the appeal during valedictory programs and a book launch titled 'Governance Crises and Contradictions in Nigeria's International Relations,' held in honor of retired Professor of International Relations, Solomon Akinboye, at the Faculty of Social Sciences Lecture Theatre, University of Lagos (UNILAG).

Key Points from the Lecture

In his lecture, Fawole argued that while scholars and governments may offer recommendations on national issues, the role of ordinary citizens remains decisive in determining whether Nigeria will survive growing internal and external pressures. He described Nigeria as a fragile multinational state, shaped by historical fault lines that continue to expose the country to foreign exploitation. He emphasized that defending sovereignty is not just a government duty but a collective responsibility of all citizens.
