The Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, was greeted with a vibrant celebration by women and age-grade groups in her Delta State community during a recent home visit, where she joined in the dancing and received special tributes for her global achievements.
Community celebrates WTO chief with songs and dance
In a display of pride and affection, members of Okonjo-Iweala's community serenaded her with traditional songs and dances, honoring her as the first African and first woman to lead the WTO. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as the women performed a series of songs, and community members joined in the chants, proudly singing, “na our mama be this o.”
Okonjo-Iweala, dressed in a simple outfit and notably without her signature scarf—a style she is widely recognized for—smiled with visible joy as she embraced the moment and joined the women in their dance.

Following the performance, the community honored the former Nigerian finance minister with special tributes, celebrating her dedication, achievements, and the pride she has brought to them on the global stage. The visit came shortly after Okonjo-Iweala attended the 2026 Delta State Investment Summit, where she called for a stronger maintenance culture in Nigeria.
