Nigerian Monarch Calls for Unity Amid Trump's Military Threats
Osun Monarch Urges Unity Amid US Invasion Threats

The Olowu of Kuta, Oba Hammeed Makama Oyelude, has made a passionate appeal for national unity and patriotism as Nigeria faces escalating tensions with the United States over alleged Christian persecution.

Monarch's Call for National Solidarity

Speaking during the 35th edition of Kuta Day celebration on Saturday, the prominent traditional ruler emphasized that Nigerians must set aside political and ethnic differences to confront the security challenges threatening the nation. Oba Makama stressed that collective responsibility and patriotic commitment are essential for overcoming the current crisis.

The monarch declared, "Irrespective of political leaning and affiliation, this is the time to show our patriotic zeal. We must all bear in mind that we must have the country first before thinking of any ambition." His comments come amid growing international concern about Nigeria's security situation.

Appeal to Leadership and Armed Forces

While commending President Bola Tinubu for his leadership, the Olowu urged the Nigerian leader to inspire the armed forces and boost their morale in the fight against insurgents. He specifically addressed the newly appointed Service Chiefs, challenging them to act decisively to end the country's prolonged battle with terrorists.

"Your appointment is coming at the defining moment in our chequered history," Oba Makama told the military leaders. "I urge the service chiefs to be conscious of the fact that all resources, both human capital and equipment, must be put to the best use now to end the insurgency."

International Dimension and Trump's Threats

The monarch's appeal comes against the backdrop of former US President Donald Trump's threats of military intervention in Nigeria. Trump has redesignated Nigeria as a 'country of particular concern' and warned of potential airstrikes or boots on the ground to protect Christians from terrorist attacks.

In a surprising move, Oba Makama directly appealed to Trump for support, requesting actionable intelligence and advanced platforms that could help Nigerian forces eliminate terrorist networks. This appeal highlights the complex international dimensions of Nigeria's security challenges.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu has assured Nigerians that his administration is engaging the world diplomatically to address the situation. The Nigerian leader vowed that the country will defeat terrorism despite the political headwinds and international pressure.

The US military has reportedly drawn up contingency plans for potential airstrikes in Nigeria following Trump's directive to the Pentagon to prepare for intervention. This development has raised concerns among Nigerian security experts, including former Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant-General Abdulrahman Dambazau, who suggested the US might be pursuing its own agenda, potentially including establishing military bases in Nigeria.

The Olowu concluded that true patriotism requires all Nigerians to contribute to peacebuilding, emphasizing that national interest must supersede political or religious sentiments during this critical period.
