President Tinubu Departs Abuja for Historic UK State Visit, Eyes Strategic Deals
President Bola Tinubu embarked on a historic two-day state visit to the United Kingdom on Tuesday, departing from Abuja with the aim of strengthening bilateral ties through key agreements. The President, accompanied by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, left the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at approximately 10 am. This visit follows a formal invitation from British monarch King Charles III, who will host the Nigerian leader and his wife at Windsor Castle.
Airport Send-Off and Royal Engagements
Senior government officials and security chiefs, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, were present to see off President Tinubu. Upon arrival in the UK, King Charles III and Queen Camilla will host the President and First Lady to a special exhibition from the Royal Collection, featuring items connected to Nigeria. The itinerary includes private discussions between the monarch and President Tinubu, as well as a joint engagement with organisations involved in interfaith dialogue at national and international levels. A State Banquet will also be hosted by the Royal Family in honour of the Nigerian delegation.
Bilateral Meetings and Key Agreements
Beyond the royal engagements, President Tinubu will hold a bilateral meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street. This meeting is expected to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors, culminating in the signing of memoranda of understanding and agreements covering trade, investment, defence, and cultural cooperation. The visit is anticipated to result in agreements and memoranda in critical sectors such as trade and investment, energy transition, solid minerals development, and security cooperation.
Landmark Financing Deal and Cultural Events
During the visit, President Tinubu will witness the signing of a landmark £746 million financing agreement involving UK Export Finance, the Nigerian Ports Authority, and Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Finance. This financing package will support the refurbishment of two key maritime infrastructure facilities: the Lagos Port Complex and the Tin Can Island Port Complex. Additionally, the President will attend the Nigerian Modernism exhibition as guest of honour, an event designed to showcase modern Nigerian art and culture. He will also participate in a reception bringing together Nigerian and British business leaders, as well as members of the Nigerian diaspora in the United Kingdom.
Conclusion and Return
Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, stated in a release that President Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria at the conclusion of the two-day visit. This state visit marks a significant step in enhancing Nigeria-UK relations, with a focus on strategic partnerships and economic development.
