President Donald Trump has announced that the United States and Iran have reached a peace deal, bringing an end to their three-and-a-half-month-long conflict. The announcement was made on Sunday evening, June 14, with details emerging about the reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Peace Deal Announcement
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump declared: “The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all! I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade. Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”
The Strait of Hormuz, which carries approximately 20% of the world’s oil supply, is scheduled to reopen on Friday, June 19, coinciding with the signing of the formal agreement in Switzerland, according to officials.
Key Points of the Agreement
The White House outlined five key components of the deal during a briefing with reporters on Friday:
- Iran will destroy its highly enriched uranium.
- Tehran will pledge never to obtain a nuclear weapon.
- Economic relief will be provided after the first two steps are completed.
- The Strait of Hormuz will be opened immediately upon signing.
- Iran must cease funding terrorist groups, including Hezbollah.
A senior administration official emphasized that economic relief would be tied to “physical milestones” and would be based on action and verification.
Implementation Process
The signing will initiate a 60-day negotiation period to determine the future of Iran’s nuclear program and the extent of sanctions relief, officials confirmed. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on X: “Following intensive talks, we are pleased to announce that the Peace Deal between the United States of America and Islamic Republic of Iran has been REACHED. Both sides have declared the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts.”
Pakistan will help facilitate a series of meetings this week leading up to the formal event in Switzerland, during which the parties will lay the groundwork for technical talks and the official signing ceremony, Sharif added.
Meanwhile, Qatari negotiators flew into Tehran on Sunday morning in coordination with the United States to assist in finalizing the agreement.
