Austria Updates Visa-Free Travel List for 2026

The Austrian Agency for Education and Internationalisation (OeAD) has published an updated list of countries whose citizens can enter Austria without a visa in 2026. Under the policy, travellers from approved nations can stay for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without needing a visa.

While standard Nigerian passport holders still require a Schengen visa, the guidelines provide alternative pathways for Nigerians with dual nationality or valid residence permits from other Schengen states.

Who Can Enter Austria Visa-Free?

According to the official document, citizens of the following countries and territories do not need a visa for short-term stays:

Exemptions for Nigerian Travellers

Although Nigeria is not on the visa-free list, two major exemptions apply:

  • Schengen Residence Title Holders: Nigerian citizens holding a valid residence permit from another Schengen member state can enter Austria for up to 90 days within 180 days without a visa.
  • Dual Citizens: Nigerians who have acquired citizenship in an eligible country can travel using their second passport.

How the Visa Exemption Works

The OeAD explains that travellers from approved countries can stay for up to 90 days within a 180-day window. This applies to tourism, business, or family visits. Holders of residence permits from other Schengen countries are also exempt, as are dual nationals with passports from visa-free countries.

Legit.ng also reported that Zimbabwe has published its own visa-on-arrival list, with several African countries included. Eligible travellers can pre-fill entry declarations online to speed up the process.
