Stakeholders are increasingly championing cooperative housing schemes as a practical solution to Africa's deepening housing crisis, which is fueled by rapid urbanization, growing deficits, and soaring homeownership costs. At a press conference preceding the Cooperative Housing Summit Africa (CHOSA AFRICA 2026), the summit's convener, Yemi Adelakun, highlighted that cooperative housing offers a realistic pathway to reducing the continent's widening housing gap, particularly for low- and middle-income earners who are excluded from traditional mortgage systems.
Challenges with Traditional Housing Finance
Adelakun noted that many Africans face significant barriers to homeownership, including high interest rates, limited access to long-term financing, and unstable incomes. These factors make conventional housing finance inaccessible for a large portion of the population.
Benefits of Cooperative Housing
Cooperative housing enables individuals and groups to pool resources, making land acquisition, housing development, and repayment structures more affordable and accessible. Beyond providing shelter, this model fosters community development, social inclusion, and economic empowerment by allowing members to collectively own and manage housing projects. Adelakun emphasized that cooperative housing has proven successful in several countries, where citizens access decent housing through shared financial responsibility and long-term planning.
Call for Supportive Policies
He stressed the need for governments, financial institutions, private developers, and development partners to create policies and funding mechanisms that encourage the growth of cooperative housing initiatives across Africa. Supportive regulations and affordable financing are critical to ensuring broader benefits from the model.
Upcoming Summit
The upcoming Cooperative Housing Summit Africa (CHOSA AFRICA 2026) will bring together policymakers, housing experts, investors, cooperative societies, and other stakeholders from across the continent. The summit aims to discuss innovative strategies, partnerships, and sustainable solutions to tackle Africa's housing challenges and expand access to affordable homes.
