FEC Approves First Major NYSC Reform in 53 Years

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), marking the first major review of the scheme since its establishment 53 years ago. The decision was announced on June 29, 2026, following the FEC meeting.

Civilian Leadership and Military Security

As part of the reforms, the FEC directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Youth to amend the NYSC Act and its regulations to incorporate the approved changes. One of the key changes is that the NYSC's operational leadership will now be headed by a civilian, while the military will continue to provide security for corps members nationwide. This shift aims to modernize the scheme's administration while maintaining the safety of participants.

Focus on Skills and Economic Growth

According to the government, the reforms are aimed at transforming the NYSC into a skill-driven, productivity-focused, and youth-empowerment institution that aligns with the administration's goal of building a $1 trillion Nigerian economy. The NYSC, originally established in 1973 to foster national unity and development, will now emphasize entrepreneurial training and job creation for young graduates.
