The Lagos State Government is making significant strides in modernizing education by distributing smart digital devices to students across the state. Anchored on the third pillar of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's T.H.E.M.E.S agenda, which prioritizes Education and Technology as key drivers for a 21st-century economy, the program also aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Hope Agenda. This dual alignment underscores a commitment to integrating digital tools into the educational framework to foster economic growth and national development.
Massive Reach: 600,000 Students to Benefit
Approximately 600,000 public secondary school students are set to benefit from this expanding program. The initiative is spearheaded by the State's Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, under the leadership of Commissioner Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, and facilitated by the Office of the Permanent Secretary. This high-level involvement highlights the government's dedication to transforming pedagogical approaches and ensuring widespread access to digital resources.
Evolution and Growth of the Digital Learning Program
The initiative has evolved significantly since its inception. Starting with the introduction of learning devices in 2020, it progressed to the rollout of smart devices in 2023, and now enters a new phase with the distribution of thousands of Hope Digital Learning Tablets. This trajectory reflects a sustained effort to adapt and scale digital education solutions to meet the needs of students in Lagos State.
Robust Content and Connectivity Features
Powered by Liv.ing data-enabled SIMs and the Roducate platform, the devices offer a comprehensive suite of curriculum-aligned content. This includes interactive lessons, educational videos, mock examinations, and life skills resources. Combined with simplified textbooks, this integrated model ensures that students have continuous, lifelong access to quality education, bridging gaps in traditional learning methods.
Tangible Results and Future Expectations
According to Elias Olawale of the Public Affairs Unit, the initiative has already yielded positive outcomes. Public secondary school students achieved an 80 percent WAEC pass rate in 2021, marking a significant improvement. With over 600,000 students set to benefit, the program promotes inclusive learning through secure connectivity and community engagement. It also includes performance-based rewards for students, teachers, and parents, fostering a collaborative educational environment.
