The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has released its weather forecast for Tuesday, June 9, 2026, predicting a mix of sunshine, cloud cover, and thunderstorms across various parts of the country. Residents are advised to prepare for changing weather conditions and take necessary precautions.
Northern States: Sunny Mornings, Afternoon Storms
In the northern region, NiMet expects mostly sunny conditions in the morning. However, isolated thunderstorms and light rainfall are likely in parts of Taraba State. As the day progresses, moderate thunderstorms and rainfall are forecast for Kano, Jigawa, Borno, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, and Taraba states. The agency stated: "Thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected in parts of Kano, Jigawa, Borno, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, and Taraba States."
North-Central Region: Cloudy Skies and Thunderstorms
The North-Central region will experience cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine in the morning. Light rain is possible in parts of Benue and Plateau states. By afternoon and evening, thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are expected in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa, Niger, Kwara, Plateau, Benue, and Kogi states. NiMet advised residents in low-lying areas to remain alert, as temporary flooding could occur in some locations.
Southern States: Widespread Rainfall Expected
In the southern region, NiMet predicts cloudy conditions with chances of morning rainfall in Rivers, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River states. Widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are expected across most southern states later in the day. Residents should be prepared for wet conditions and potential disruptions.
Precautions and Advice
NiMet warned that strong winds could precede rainfall and advised residents to avoid sheltering under trees or near electric poles during thunderstorms. Motorists are urged to drive cautiously, and airlines are advised to obtain regular weather updates for safe flight operations. The agency emphasizes the importance of staying informed and taking necessary precautions to ensure safety.
This forecast follows a similar warning issued on June 4, 2026, when NiMet predicted thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across many parts of the country. Residents are encouraged to stay updated through official channels and prepare for possible weather-related disruptions.
