The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has commissioned its first Smart Self-Service Station in Abuja, designed to provide accurate fuel dispensing, transparent pricing, and secure digital transactions, according to Group Chief Executive Officer Engr. Bayo Ojulari.
What the Smart Station Offers
Speaking in an interview, Ojulari explained that the facility is more than a conventional filling station. It integrates self-service fuelling, digital payments, electric vehicle (EV) charging, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in one location, developed alongside technology and retail partners. "It signals a shift towards a more integrated and technology-enabled energy retail experience," he said.
Ojulari linked the project to three of NNPC's core strategic pillars: Execution Excellence, Profitable Growth, and Partner of Choice. He noted that the station demonstrates how technology can make retail operations more efficient while keeping customers at the centre of the experience.
Phased Nationwide Rollout Plans
On when Nigerians across the country can expect similar facilities, Ojulari stressed that urgency and caution must move together. "When we scale, we want to replicate a model that works—not one that we will have to rebuild," he said.
The current station serves as a proof of concept. NNPC is working closely with technology partners to study its performance and refine the system before expanding. A phased rollout is planned, with each location chosen based on customer demand, infrastructure readiness, and the availability of the different energy options.
Accuracy and Reliability Controls
Ojulari said the station has been built with controls covering pricing calibration, dispensing accuracy, and payment security, all developed with technology providers. Real-time monitoring is in place to detect and fix problems quickly. The company plans to use both operational data and direct customer feedback to continuously improve the system.
"Our objective is simple: every transaction must be easy, secure and transparent, and every customer must leave confident that they received exactly what they paid for," he said.
The Smart Station is part of NNPC Limited's broader transformation under its "Fit-for-Future" strategic pillars, which the company has been driving for over a year. The phased rollout will be guided by customer demand and infrastructure readiness, ensuring that expansion is both sustainable and responsive to market needs.
