NYSC Announces Blacklist for Defaulting Employers
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has declared that employers who do not provide accommodation and transportation for corps members assigned to them will be blacklisted and barred from receiving future postings. This policy was announced by the Director-General, Brig. Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, during a working visit to Kogi State.
DG Warns Employers on Welfare Responsibilities
Speaking to corps members and stakeholders, Nafiu emphasized that employers have a duty to ensure the well-being of corps members under their supervision. He warned that organizations neglecting to provide these essentials would no longer benefit from the scheme's services. "Any employer who did not provide accommodation and transportation for Corps Members would be blacklisted from enjoying Corps services," he stated.
Relief for Corps Members
The announcement is expected to ease the burden on many serving and prospective corps members, who often struggle to find affordable housing or spend a large portion of their monthly allowance on commuting to their places of primary assignment. The NYSC DG also reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment to the safety and welfare of corps members throughout their service year.
Call for Safety and Skill Development
Nafiu urged corps members to remain security-conscious by reporting suspicious activities and avoiding risky situations. He also encouraged them to participate in the NYSC's Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme to gain practical skills for self-reliance after service. Additionally, he advised cultivating a savings culture, highlighting the importance of prudent financial management amid Nigeria's economic challenges.
The NYSC has consistently called on employers and stakeholders to support corps members by providing a conducive working environment and adequate welfare. This latest warning signals the scheme's intent to enforce these responsibilities more strictly by denying defaulting employers access to corps members.
