The leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, has declared that poverty in Nigeria is not an inevitable fate but a direct consequence of failed leadership and misguided policies. In a strongly worded statement, the presidential hopeful criticized the economic approach of President Bola Tinubu's administration, highlighting the deteriorating living standards of ordinary Nigerians.
Economic Reforms and Citizen Welfare
Adebayo argued that the economic reforms implemented over the past three years have failed to improve the well-being of citizens. Instead, households are grappling with soaring living costs, diminished purchasing power, and widespread hardship. He emphasized that Nigeria's abundant resources and economic potential remain untapped due to leadership that has not created opportunities or ensured that growth benefits the broader population.
Measuring Government Performance
The SDP leader stressed that government success should be evaluated not merely by macroeconomic indicators but by tangible improvements in people's lives—such as access to jobs, affordable food, and safer communities. He asserted that poverty can be effectively tackled through good governance, clear development priorities, and policies designed to expand opportunities for all Nigerians.
Adebayo presented the SDP as a viable alternative, committed to reducing poverty, generating employment, enhancing security, and promoting equitable distribution of national resources. He stated, “Poverty is not Nigeria's destiny. It is the result of failed leadership and it can be defeated with the right government, the right priorities, and the right plan.” He added, “The problem in Nigeria is not a lack of resources. It is a lack of opportunities and a failure by those in power to ensure that growth reaches the people.”
Call for Civic Participation
In his concluding remarks, Adebayo urged Nigerians to actively engage in the democratic process and support initiatives aimed at national renewal. He believes that with collective effort and the right policies, Nigeria can overcome its challenges and achieve lasting prosperity.
