Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has blamed scavengers for the recent flooding in Abuja, stating that they have been blocking drainage systems. He also announced that the Abuja master plan is facing a review to address the recurring issue.
Scavengers Blamed for Blocked Drains
Speaking during an inspection of some flood-affected areas in the nation’s capital, Wike said that the activities of scavengers, who often search for scrap materials in drainages, have contributed significantly to the flooding. He noted that these individuals deliberately block the drainages with debris and other materials, preventing free flow of water.
According to the minister, the FCT Administration will no longer tolerate such practices, and measures will be taken to ensure that drainages are cleared and maintained regularly. He emphasized that the safety of residents is paramount.
Master Plan Review Underway
Wike further disclosed that the Abuja master plan, which was designed to guide the city’s development, is now facing a review. He said that the review is necessary to accommodate current realities and to incorporate measures that will mitigate flooding.
The minister explained that the original master plan did not adequately provide for the current population and infrastructure demands, leading to encroachment on flood plains and improper waste disposal. He stressed that the review will ensure that new developments are in line with environmental standards.
Government's Response and Next Steps
In response to the flooding, the FCT Administration has deployed teams to clear blocked drainages and canals. Wike assured residents that the government is committed to preventing future occurrences and will work with relevant agencies to enforce compliance.
He also called on residents to desist from dumping refuse into drainages and to cooperate with the government in its efforts to keep the city clean and safe. The minister’s remarks come as Abuja continues to experience heavy rainfall, leading to flooding in several parts of the city.
