Court Adjourns El-Rufai's Bail Hearing to March 31, Remands Him in ICPC Custody
A Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna has adjourned the hearing of the bail application filed by former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to March 31, 2026. The court ordered that El-Rufai remain in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) until the bail hearing takes place.
Arraignment and Charges
El-Rufai was arraigned before the court on Tuesday, March 25, 2026, on a 10-count charge brought against him by the ICPC. The charges border on alleged conversion of public property and money laundering. During the proceedings, El-Rufai pleaded not guilty to all the charges, maintaining his innocence in the face of the allegations.
Court Proceedings and Security Arrangements
The former governor was brought to the court premises at approximately 9:00 a.m. by security operatives in a Hilux vehicle. He remained in the vehicle for about 30 minutes before being escorted into the courtroom under tight security. There was a heavy security presence within and around the court premises ahead of the proceedings, ensuring order and safety during the high-profile case.
Legal Arguments on Bail Application
Counsel to the defendant, Mr. Ukpon Akpan, urged the court to grant bail to enable his client to prepare adequately for his defence. He argued that El-Rufai should be released to facilitate a fair trial process. However, the prosecution counsel, Dr. Osuobeni Ekoi Akponimisingha, opposed the application, contending that granting bail at this stage could potentially interfere with ongoing investigations by the commission. The prosecution emphasized the need to prevent any obstruction of justice as the case unfolds.
Judge's Ruling and Adjournment
After listening to arguments from both parties, the presiding judge, Rilwanu Aikawa, adjourned the matter to March 31, 2026, specifically for the hearing of the bail application. The judge's decision to postpone the hearing allows for further consideration of the bail request while El-Rufai remains in ICPC custody. This custody has been in effect since February 19, following his release by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), indicating a transfer of custody between anti-corruption agencies.
The case highlights ongoing legal and anti-corruption efforts in Nigeria, with El-Rufai's status as a former governor drawing significant public and media attention. The adjournment to March 31 sets the stage for a crucial bail hearing that could impact the trajectory of the trial.
