Court Adjourns El-Rufai Bail Hearing to March 31, Former Governor Remains in ICPC Custody
The Federal High Court in Kaduna has adjourned the bail application of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to March 31, 2026. El-Rufai, who was arraigned on Tuesday, continues to be held in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on allegations of conversion of public property and money laundering.
Heavy Security and Court Proceedings
El-Rufai was escorted to the court around 9:00 a.m. in a Hilux vehicle and held inside for approximately 25 minutes before being led into the courtroom. Security was heavily deployed around the court premises ahead of the proceedings, reflecting the high-profile nature of the case.
During the hearing, El-Rufai's lawyer, Ukpon Akpan, urged the court to grant bail to enable his client to adequately prepare his defence. However, the prosecution opposed the application, arguing that granting bail could potentially impede ongoing investigations into the allegations.
Background of Detention and Legal Challenges
El-Rufai has been in ICPC custody since February 19, following his release by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). His prolonged detention has sparked significant public debate, with various stakeholders calling for either his immediate release or formal arraignment to proceed with the legal process.
Sources indicate that the former governor declined to answer questions during ICPC interrogation, citing his constitutional right to remain silent. Earlier, on March 5, a magistrate court extended his initial remand order by 14 days, further prolonging his custody.
In a related development, El-Rufai has filed a fundamental rights enforcement suit before the Federal High Court in Abuja. This legal action challenges the ICPC's search of his residence and questions the legality of the February 19 remand order, adding another layer to the complex legal battle.
The adjournment to March 31 leaves El-Rufai in ICPC custody for the interim, as the court deliberates on the bail application amidst ongoing investigations and public scrutiny.
