Court Adjourns El-Rufai's Bail Hearing to March 31, Ex-Governor Remains in ICPC Custody
The Federal High Court in Kaduna has adjourned the bail application of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to March 31, 2026. El-Rufai continues to be held in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on serious allegations of conversion of public property and money laundering.
Heavy Security and Court Proceedings
Security was heavily deployed around the court premises ahead of the proceedings, reflecting the high-profile nature of the case. El-Rufai was escorted to court around 9:00 a.m. in a Hilux vehicle and held inside for approximately 25 minutes before being led into the courtroom for the hearing.
During the session, El-Rufai's lawyer, Ukpon Akpan, urged the court to grant bail to enable his client to adequately prepare his defence. However, the prosecution opposed the application, arguing that granting bail could potentially impede ongoing investigations into the matter.
Extended Detention and Legal Challenges
El-Rufai has been in ICPC custody since February 19, 2026, following his release by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). His prolonged detention has sparked significant public debate, with various calls for either his release or formal arraignment to proceed swiftly.
Sources indicate that the former governor declined to answer questions during ICPC interrogation, citing his constitutional right to remain silent. Earlier, on March 5, a magistrate court extended his initial remand order by an additional 14 days, further prolonging his custody.
Fundamental Rights Suit Filed
In a related development, El-Rufai has filed a fundamental rights enforcement suit before the Federal High Court in Abuja. This legal action challenges the ICPC's search of his residence and questions the legality of the February 19 remand order, adding another layer to the complex legal battle surrounding his case.
The adjournment to March 31 means El-Rufai will remain in ICPC custody for at least another week, as the court deliberates on the bail application amidst ongoing investigations and public scrutiny.
