MASSOB Alleges Persecution of Members in Nigeria, Calls for Global Intervention
A pro-Biafra group, the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), has raised serious allegations of persecution against its members in Nigeria. The group expressed deep concern over what it describes as systematic killings, arbitrary detentions, and widespread victimization of its followers, despite maintaining a peaceful approach in its advocacy efforts.
Violations of Fundamental Rights
In a statement issued on Friday by its National Director of Information, Edeson Samuel, MASSOB accused Nigerian authorities of violating the fundamental human rights of its members. The group highlighted that the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly are being consistently infringed upon, creating an atmosphere of fear and repression.
Samuel urged the global community, including the United Nations and other human rights organizations, to take immediate action to protect MASSOB members. He emphasized that the group has always adhered to non-violent principles throughout its over 26 years of existence, without engaging in criminal activities or armed struggle.
Appeal for International Support
MASSOB called on foreign countries hosting asylum-seeking members to ensure their safety and refrain from deporting them back to Nigeria, where their lives could be at risk. The group appealed for global intervention to halt the harassment and arrests of its members, both within Nigeria and those returning to the country.
The statement reiterated MASSOB's commitment to peaceful self-determination advocacy, condemning what it termed as brutal actions by Nigerian authorities. It stressed that the time has come for the world to stand in solidarity with the oppressed people of Biafra and hold the Nigerian government accountable for its alleged human rights abuses.
MASSOB remains dedicated to its non-violent pursuit of Biafran sovereignty and continues to call for an end to the persecution of its members, urging a collaborative international effort to address these pressing issues.
