Husband Claims N2,000 Bride Price Paid, Wife Refuses Cooking Duties in Oyo Court
A contentious marital case has been brought before the Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, where a husband, Ayinla, has made startling allegations against his wife, Mosunmola. Ayinla testified that despite paying a bride price of N2,000, his wife has ceased cooking for him, a claim that forms part of a broader dispute over their deteriorating relationship.
Wife's Allegations of Irresponsibility and Neglect
Mosunmola initiated the court proceedings, accusing her husband of leading an irresponsible lifestyle that has severely impacted their family. She detailed how Ayinla consistently neglected his domestic responsibilities, showing little concern for her well-being and that of their children. According to her testimony, he often returned home late at night, after she and the children had already retired to bed, exacerbating tensions in their household.
She further explained that their marriage was marked by frequent quarrels and multiple separations, which eventually led her to leave when she could no longer endure the strain. Mosunmola emphasized that she single-handedly managed the children's needs, including their feeding and schooling, while alleging that Ayinla's primary contribution was physical abuse. She has petitioned the court for custody of their children and for Ayinla to be held accountable for their welfare and education.
Husband's Counterclaims and Defense
In his response, Ayinla agreed to the dissolution of the marriage but countered with his own grievances. He insisted that he did pay the N2,000 bride price, contradicting Mosunmola's claim that he failed to fulfill traditional marital rites. Ayinla described his wife as talkative and lacking in morals, asserting that these traits made their coexistence intolerable.
He specifically highlighted that Mosunmola refused to cook for him, instead instructing him to give money to their children to prepare his meals. Ayinla also accused her of showing him no respect and frequently insulting him, which he said contributed to the breakdown of their union. He maintained that the marriage effectively ended when she moved out of his home.

The court president, Mrs. S.M. Akintayo, presided over the hearing, where both parties presented their conflicting testimonies.
