NBA Issues Directive to Garki Branch Over Maina Patronage
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has taken a firm stance against corruption by ordering the immediate removal of Abdulrasheed Maina as a Patron of its Garki Branch. In a decisive move, NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, released a statement on social media platform X, condemning the alleged appointment of Maina as the 'Grand Patron of the NBA Garki Branch.' This action underscores the association's commitment to upholding the rule of law and integrity within the legal profession.
Condemnation of Corrupt Practices
Osigwe emphasized that appointing Maina, who was convicted of embezzling over N2 billion in pension funds, severely undermines the government's anti-corruption efforts. He stated that such an appointment tarnishes the reputation of both the NBA and the broader legal community, which is dedicated to promoting justice and accountability. The NBA president highlighted that this move contradicts the core values of the profession, including respect for judicial processes and public confidence.
Disciplinary Actions and Warnings
The NBA has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Bamidele Ojo, the Chairman of the NBA Garki Branch, for actions deemed inconsistent with the NBA's Constitution and the Rules of Professional Conduct. Osigwe described Ojo's conduct as a significant breach of professional responsibility and institutional discipline. He cautioned Ojo to refrain from making any statements or representations on behalf of Maina or other litigants in ongoing court cases, warning that such behavior would provoke a strong organizational response.
Upholding Judicial Integrity
In the statement, Osigwe affirmed that the NBA will not use its platform to influence public opinion or judicial proceedings, particularly in cases that are sub judice, such as Maina's pending appeal before the Supreme Court. While acknowledging Maina's right to appeal, the association made it clear that it will not condone actions that could be seen as rehabilitating the image of individuals convicted of criminal offences. The NBA stressed that endorsing corrupt practices fails its responsibilities to society and the cause of justice.
Core Values and Future Implications
The NBA reiterated that integrity, accountability, and public trust are foundational to its mission. This directive serves as a reminder to all branches and members to align with these principles. The association's proactive stance aims to eliminate corruption and uphold the highest standards of the legal profession in Nigeria.
