NBA-SLP Stresses Critical Need to Reinforce Ethical Standards in Legal Profession
The Nigerian Bar Association Section on Legal Practice (NBA-SLP) has underscored an urgent and pressing need to rebuild and reinforce ethical standards within the legal profession. This call to action comes amid concerns over declining perceptions of integrity among young lawyers, which the section insists must be deliberately and swiftly reversed to restore public confidence.
Conference Details and Theme
Chairman of the NBA-SLP, Folashade Alli (SAN), made these remarks during a press conference held in Lagos ahead of the section's 2026 yearly conference. The event is scheduled to take place from April 7 to 10 at the National Theatre in Lagos, under the theme "Evolving Trends: Nigerian Legal Practice, Global Perspectives." Alli emphasized that the SLP serves as the heartbeat of the profession, with a renewed commitment to nurturing young lawyers and expanding the scope of legal practice beyond traditional litigation.
Training and Development Initiatives
As part of the conference, the opening day will feature a comprehensive five-hour intensive training session. A leading Nigerian law firm has volunteered to train 1,000 young lawyers on emerging trends and the future of legal practice. This initiative is designed to equip participants with practical knowledge of evolving legal frameworks, innovative practices, and global standards necessary to thrive in a rapidly changing legal environment.
"All the sessions are tailored towards innovation, evolving trends, Nigerian practices and global perspectives. The young lawyers are the future of the profession and we must invest in them," Alli stated.
Conference Activities and Speakers
Activities for the first day include a welcome event at Terra Kulture on Victoria Island, featuring a film screening and networking session. Participants from across Nigeria are expected to converge in Lagos for this gathering. The conference will host an array of local and international speakers from various countries, addressing critical topics such as arbitration, taxation, and the impact of technology on legal practice.
Attendees will benefit from six to seven plenary sessions and two fireside chats, all aimed at deepening knowledge and promoting continuous professional development. Highlighting a key milestone, Alli announced that the NBA-SLP will unveil a comprehensive law firm directory, the first of its kind in Nigeria, aimed at improving visibility and access to legal practitioners nationwide. Over 2,600 law firms have already registered, with a formal launch set for April 8.
Emphasis on Broader Legal Practice
Alli emphasized that legal practice extends far beyond courtroom litigation, incorporating diverse specializations that require ongoing learning and adaptation. "We are building on the legacy of those before us, while ensuring that the SLP evolves with global standards. This conference reflects our commitment to innovation, excellence and the future of the profession," she added.
Support from Committee Leaders
Co-Chairman of the Conference Planning Committee (CPC), Mr. Kelechi Obi (SAN), described the section as central to the Bar, noting that ethical and proper practice remains the foundation of the profession. He explained that the conference theme reflects the necessity for lawyers to align with global developments beyond traditional roles. Obi also highlighted that the National Theatre venue symbolizes the synergy between law and the arts.
Keynote speaker Judge Taoheed Olufemi Elias and other top legal figures will lead discussions designed to inspire actionable outcomes for participants. Vice Chairman of the NBA-SLP, Tonye Krukrubo (SAN), reported that the 2026 conference is nearing full physical attendance, with virtual participation still open, especially for young lawyers seeking to enhance their advocacy skills.
Special Sessions and Logistics
Krukrubo highlighted early events such as the Young Litigators Debate and a fireside session moderated by Yinka Omorogbe, featuring former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. Discussions will address judicial independence, financial autonomy, and practical issues like garnishee proceedings, with resolutions expected to drive reforms and strengthen the rule of law.
Chairman of the CPC, Mrs. Abimbola Akeredolu (SAN), assured participants of seamless traffic management during the conference. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has been engaged to ensure free vehicular movement in the host area, with additional security arrangements in place involving local law enforcement and police.
