Governor Alex Otti has declared that democracy has become the turning point in Abia State's journey toward recovery, stability, and development, insisting that accountable leadership remains the key driver of progress in the state.
Democracy Day Message
In his 2026 Democracy Day message titled “Of Freedom and Development,” Otti reflected on Nigeria’s democratic journey, describing June 12 as a symbolic reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought to restore civil rule in the country. He noted that the meaning of democracy goes beyond elections, stressing that its true value is measured by how much it improves the lives of ordinary citizens.
Governance Anchored on Transparency
According to him, Abia State has begun to experience a new phase of governance anchored on transparency, fiscal responsibility, and purposeful leadership. He argued that the gains recorded so far under his administration demonstrate that when public resources are properly managed, government can quickly regain the trust of the people.
Otti highlighted ongoing investments in infrastructure renewal, road rehabilitation, healthcare delivery, education, and security enhancement, saying these interventions are already reshaping the economic and social landscape of the state. He maintained that such progress reflects what is possible when leaders prioritize the public good over personal or political interests.
Impact on Citizens' Daily Lives
The governor emphasized that democracy thrives only when citizens can feel its impact in their daily lives. He said that governance must be judged not by promises but by visible results such as improved roads, better schools, functional hospitals, and a safer environment for businesses and families.
Commitment to Institutional Reforms
He further stated that his administration remains committed to deep institutional reforms aimed at strengthening public service delivery and eliminating inefficiency. According to him, rebuilding Abia is not just about physical infrastructure but also about restoring confidence in government systems that had previously been weakened.
Gratitude to Abia Residents
Otti expressed gratitude to the people of Abia for their continued support and patience, noting that their cooperation has been critical to the reforms currently underway. He assured residents that his government would not deviate from its development agenda, pledging continuity in policies designed to promote inclusive growth.
Tribute to Democracy Heroes
The governor also paid tribute to Nigeria’s pro-democracy heroes, describing them as the foundation upon which the country’s current democratic experience is built. He urged Nigerians to remain committed to protecting democratic values such as accountability, transparency, and the rule of law.
He cautioned that democracy must be actively defended to prevent regression, adding that governance must always reflect the will and welfare of the people. He stressed that public office is a trust that must be exercised with humility and responsibility.
Irreversible Transformation
Otti concluded by reaffirming that the transformation currently underway in Abia is irreversible, insisting that the state has moved beyond the era of mismanagement and is now firmly positioned on a path of sustainable development and renewed public confidence.
