Sheikh Umar Denies DSS Detention, Clarifies Invitation for Questioning
Religious leader Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar has firmly dismissed claims that he was detained by the Department of State Services (DSS), countering allegations made by former presidential candidate Peter Obi. In a recent video posted on social media, Sheikh Umar clarified that he was merely invited by the DSS for questioning and was never held in custody, emphasizing his safety and well-being following the encounter.
Peter Obi's Allegations and Concerns
Peter Obi, a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), had asserted that Sheikh Umar was arrested shortly after Obi visited him in Kaduna. Obi expressed deep concern over this development, stating, "This development underscores the deeply troubling state of our nation and our democracy, where freedom of speech and movement is increasingly threatened, and where citizens and perceived political opponents face harassment and unnecessary persecution. This cannot be allowed to continue." He called on authorities to uphold freedom and free speech as fundamental tenets of democracy, warning against suppression and intimidation of dissent.
Sheikh Umar's Response and Appeal for Calm
In his video statement, Sheikh Umar addressed the false reports circulating about his situation. He said, "I come today to correct a false report being circulated in some quarters. I was not detained by the DSS. I was invited for questioning. I cooperated fully, and I was released. I am free, safe and well." He further appealed to his supporters and citizens of Kaduna State to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding, urging against any actions that could lead to disorder.
Sheikh Umar also touched on the matter of former Kaduna State Governor Malam Nasir El-Rufai, advising patience and allowing due process to take its course. He encouraged prayers and peace, while addressing those dissatisfied with the current system by advocating for civic engagement through registration and voting for better leadership in future elections.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions in Nigeria's political landscape, with figures like Peter Obi raising alarms about democratic freedoms, while Sheikh Umar's clarification aims to dispel misinformation and promote stability. The exchange underscores the importance of accurate reporting and the role of public figures in maintaining social harmony amidst political discourse.
