Abeokuta South Chairman Launches Kuto Road and Bridge Project to Combat Flooding
In a significant move to tackle persistent flooding in the Kuto area, the Chairman of Abeokuta South Local Government, Afeez Balogun, has officially flagged off the construction of a 1.266-kilometre road and the rehabilitation of the Isale-Oja Kuto Bridge. This initiative aims to provide a lasting solution to the recurrent flooding that has plagued the community for over two decades, particularly during the rainy season.
Community Struggles and Long-Awaited Relief
Residents who gathered for the ceremony described the condition of the Kuto community and its Isale-Oja suburb as dire, with flooding causing severe disruptions to daily life and economic activities. Community leaders, market unions, and other stakeholders emphasized that the project was long overdue, lamenting years of neglect despite the road's critical economic importance to Abeokuta. They recalled that the road was initially constructed during the administration of former Ogun State governor, Olusegun Osoba, but subsequent interventions failed to offer a sustainable fix, leaving the area grappling with flooding and poor accessibility since 2003.
However, residents expressed optimism that this new project would bring lasting relief, especially under the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun. They commended Balogun for initiating the work and appealed for its extension to Isabo to further ease the movement of people and goods, highlighting the broader need for infrastructure improvements in the region.
Chairman's Commitment and Future Plans
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony on Tuesday, Balogun stated that the project fulfills his campaign promises and is designed to drive development in the Kuto area and its environs. He added that plans are underway to remodel Kuto Market to address congestion and improve accessibility upon completion of the road project. "After delivering this road, our next focus will be the market. The transformation will speak for itself," he assured.
Balogun also urged market women and community leaders to collaborate with the council's environmental sanitation unit to ensure proper maintenance and prevent future flooding, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in sustaining the infrastructure.
Project Details and Timelines
Earlier, the Supervisor for Works, Abidemi Lawal, explained that the road and bridge rehabilitation were carefully designed to address flooding and improve traffic flow. He assured residents that the project would be completed within six weeks, noting that qualified professionals have been engaged to ensure quality delivery. This swift timeline reflects the urgency of the situation and the local government's commitment to resolving the long-standing issue.
The project is expected to not only alleviate flooding but also boost economic activities by enhancing connectivity and safety in the area, marking a pivotal step towards sustainable urban development in Abeokuta South.
