The Borno State Independent Electoral Commission (BOSIEC) has officially declared the results of the keenly observed local government elections held across the state, with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) clinching victory in all contested positions.
APC Secures Total Victory in Grassroots Poll
Announcing the final outcomes on the evening of Monday, December 15, 2025, the BOSIEC Chairman, Dr. Tahir Shettima, confirmed that the APC won all twenty-seven chairmanship seats and the accompanying councillorship positions. The elections, which took place on Saturday, December 13, were conducted peacefully across all the local government areas of the state.
Dr. Shettima addressed journalists at the commission's headquarters in Maiduguri, providing a detailed account of the electoral process. He emphasized that the exercise was carried out in strict compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022. The chairman praised the orderly conduct of voters and the collaborative efforts that ensured a smooth polling day.
Stakeholders Hailed for Peaceful Conduct
In his remarks, the electoral umpire extended commendations to all parties involved in the successful execution of the polls. He specifically thanked the various political parties that participated, security agencies, civil society organizations, the media, and the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Borno State for their roles.
A significant part of the appreciation was directed at the state governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum. Dr. Shettima highlighted the governor's commitment to deepening democratic practices at the local government tier and his approval of the necessary resources that made the elections feasible.
Mandate for Grassroots Development
With the results now official, the focus shifts to governance. The BOSIEC chairman charged the newly elected officials to prioritize delivering the dividends of democracy to their constituents. He urged them to engage in quality representation that addresses the immediate needs of people at the grassroots level.
While the exact date is yet to be fixed, it was confirmed that the elected council chairmen will be sworn into office at a later ceremony. This electoral exercise marks a crucial step in restoring and strengthening local administration in Borno State, providing a framework for development closer to the people.
The announcement from Borno follows similar local government election conclusions in other states like Niger and Lagos, where the APC also recorded dominant performances, underscoring the party's stronghold at the grassroots level in many regions.
