Local Government Chairman Implements Strict No-Sleep Policy at Oyingbo Market
The Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government Area, Jubril Emilagba, has officially banned all individuals from sleeping within Oyingbo Market, citing escalating security concerns and the urgent need to protect lives and property in the commercial hub.
Security Meeting Leads to Preventive Directive
Emilagba issued this directive on Friday during a comprehensive security meeting with market executives and members, describing the move as a critical component of his administration's ongoing efforts to strengthen safety measures across all markets within the local government jurisdiction.
According to the chairman, the prohibition on overnight stays serves as a preventive strategy aimed at curbing potential criminal activities and safeguarding both traders and their valuable goods. "No one is permitted to sleep in the market. This directive is strictly for security reasons, to prevent criminal elements from taking advantage of the environment," he emphasized, stressing that markets should remain dedicated centers for lawful commercial activities rather than places for overnight habitation.
Collaboration with Security Agencies and Market Leadership
The chairman announced that the local government will collaborate closely with relevant security agencies and market leadership to ensure full compliance with the new regulation. "We are committed to ensuring that Oyingbo Market remains safe for traders, customers, and residents. Security agencies will be actively involved in enforcing this directive," he added, highlighting a multi-stakeholder approach to implementation.
Emilagba further reiterated his administration's commitment to regular engagement with market stakeholders, noting that cooperation with traders is essential to achieving a secure and orderly market environment. He also sensitized traders on the importance of registering for the National Identification Number and the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency, describing both initiatives as critical tools for effective identity management and enhanced security planning.
Encouragement for Political Participation and Trader Support
In addition to security measures, the chairman encouraged eligible traders to participate in the ongoing All Progressives Congress e-registration exercise, framing it as an opportunity to promote grassroots political inclusion and community involvement.
Responding on behalf of the traders, the Women Leader of Oyingbo Market, Basira Balogun, expressed strong support for the directive, describing it as a timely and necessary intervention. "We understand the security implications and we will work collaboratively with the local government to ensure compliance among all traders," she stated, indicating a positive reception from the market community.
This proactive measure reflects a broader trend of local governments in Nigeria addressing security challenges in public spaces, with Oyingbo Market serving as a focal point for these efforts in Lagos Mainland.
