LG Chairman in Morocco to Support Super Eagles for AFCON Semi

In a significant show of grassroots support, the Chairman of Agege Local Government Area in Lagos State, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, has personally traveled to Rabat, Morocco, to rally behind the Super Eagles ahead of their monumental 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final clash.

Historic Semi-Final Showdown in Rabat

The crucial match, set for a 9pm kick-off at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on Tuesday night, marks a historic moment. It will be the first AFCON meeting between Nigeria and Morocco in 22 years and only the second time the two football giants have clashed at this stage of the continental tournament. Nigeria is aiming to secure a spot in the final and move closer to a coveted fourth AFCON title.

Chairman Obasa, upon his arrival, immediately framed the encounter as a pivotal juncture for the national team. He described the semi-final as "a critical juncture where pedigree, pressure and expectation converge as AFCON 2025 heads towards its climax." Emphasizing the need for national unity, he stated, "As a devoted fan, it is imperative that every Nigerian stands behind the Super Eagles as they seek to reclaim their status as champions of Africa; that is why I am here in Rabat."

Confidence in Squad and Technical Crew

Obasa expressed strong belief in the team's ability to overcome the host nation, drawing confidence from their previous performances. "The team's impressive performances against Tunisia and Algeria demonstrate their ability to take on North African opponents," he noted, referencing the Eagles' path to the semi-finals.

He also addressed the leadership question following the absence of captain Wilfred Ndidi. "In terms of leadership, I believe the team will rally... drawing strength from Osimhen, our stand-in captain, whose relentless spirit embodies a never-say-never attitude," Obasa affirmed.

Backing for Tactical Setup

The local government chairman concluded with a vote of confidence in the team's technical direction under coach Eric Chelle. "With an unwavering mindset and the tactical brilliance of Eric Chelle guiding team selection and match strategy, I have full confidence that the Super Eagles will secure victory against Morocco," he declared.

The Super Eagles enter the match with a squad brimming with talent, including Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, and Akor Adams. This lineup is widely seen as possessing the quality needed to triumph on one of Africa's biggest sporting stages.

This show of support from a key sub-national leader coincides with similar backing from the federal government, which has also urged the team to play with the confidence of champions, highlighting the unified national sentiment behind the Super Eagles' quest for glory.
