Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to transforming markets across the state, ensuring traders can conduct their businesses in safe and secure environments.
Fourth Major Market Project Completed
The governor made this declaration during the official commissioning of the Omituntun Ultramodern Market in Omi Adio, Ibadan, on Monday. Represented by Deputy Governor Bayol Lawal, Makinde revealed that this marks the fourth ultramodern market completed under his two-term administration.
The newly inaugurated facility boasts impressive infrastructure including 406 lockup shops, 56 open stalls, an administrative office, security post, clear walkways, and modern toilet facilities. This achievement follows the earlier completion of three similar markets: Akesan Ultramodern Market in Oyo, Akinyele Farmers' Market in Ibadan, and Kajola Ultramodern Market in Ogbomoso South Local Government.
Transforming Trading Standards
Governor Makinde emphasized the strategic importance of building ultramodern markets across Oyo State. "Planning is essential; what we have come to commission here today will be replicated in many places so that our traders won't stay on the road selling their things," the governor stated.
He drew comparisons with international standards, noting: "If you go abroad, this is the standard, and that is what we are replicating in our state." The administration aims to eliminate roadside trading while providing regulated, secure business environments.
Comprehensive Market Management Plan
The governor outlined strict allocation policies to ensure fairness in shop distribution. Shops will be allocated on a one-man, one-shop basis to prevent double standards, with displaced traders receiving right of first refusal.
Security provisions have been prioritized given the current national security situation. The market will feature dedicated security personnel and installations to protect traders and customers.
Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Demola Ojo, described the project as evidence of the government's dedication to creating business-friendly environments. "This project is a testament to this administration's pledge and commitment to creating an enabling environment for business, commerce and community development," Ojo stated.
The market complex includes comprehensive facilities such as:
- Adequate water supply systems
- Clean toilets and sanitation facilities
- Proper waste management systems
- Fire safety installations
- Spacious parking areas
- Enhanced security features
Local Leaders Applaud Development
Chief Niyi Akintola, the Asiwaju of Ido Local Government and Bashorun Bamofin of Ibadanland, welcomed dignitaries to the event and confirmed that the ultramodern market "will truly make life better for our people."
He highlighted the significant transformation Ido Local Government has experienced under Governor Makinde's leadership, listing numerous completed projects including:
- Ilaju Garri Processing Factory in Ido
- 10.3 km Ido-Omi Adio Road (first constructed in 1992)
- Eleyele–Ologuneru–Ido Road
- Ongoing 48km Ido–Eruwa Road connecting Ibadan and Ibarapa zones
- Multiple other road projects and the Ultra-Modern Motor Park at Owode Housing Estate
Hon. Sheriff Adeojo, Chairman of Ido Local Government, described the market construction as fulfillment of Governor Makinde's campaign promises and delivery of democratic dividends to the people.
The project aligns with the four pillars of the Roadmap to Sustainable Development, Omituntun 2.0, focusing on Economy, Education, Healthcare, and Security, demonstrating the government's comprehensive approach to development across Oyo State.
