In a significant move to tackle waste management challenges, the Rivers State Government has officially revoked the rights of occupancy for a large parcel of land earmarked for a new environmental project.
Land Acquisition for Public Interest
The state government, under Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has initiated the compulsory acquisition of approximately 65,757.74 square metres of land located at Igwuruta in the Ikwerre Local Government Area. This action was taken citing overriding public interest and is intended for the establishment of a modern waste disposal and recycling facility.
Legal Framework and Project Details
The revocation notice was issued in accordance with Section 28 of the Land Use Act, Cap L5, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. Dated 23 November 2025, the notice serves as a formal directive for all individuals and entities with interests in the land to surrender their rights to the government.
The government has provided a detailed schedule outlining the boundaries and coordinates of the affected land. This land is crucial for the implementation of the REWAMA project, a key initiative aimed at revolutionizing waste management in Rivers State.
Expected Impact and Benefits
The development of the waste disposal and recycling facility is expected to bring substantial benefits to the state. By improving the efficiency of waste collection and processing, the project will enhance environmental management and bolster public health standards for residents. This initiative represents a critical step forward in creating a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment.
