In a significant New Year address, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has laid out a comprehensive governance and political plan for Abuja in 2026. The roadmap centers on delivering tangible infrastructure developments and ensuring a stable, violence-free electoral process for the upcoming Area Council elections.
A Year of Tangible Development for Abuja's Golden Jubilee
Wike emphasized that the year 2026 holds special significance as it marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of Nigeria's capital. He pledged that the FCT Administration would commemorate this golden jubilee by commissioning major projects that directly improve residents' lives.
The minister stated that these projects span critical sectors including education, health, transportation, security, agriculture, and the judiciary. He promised that rehabilitated schools, roads, bridges, health facilities, and transportation hubs would be rolled out across the territory in the coming months.
Nyesom Wike credited President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda for fostering what he termed "unprecedented development" in the FCT. He noted that the benefits of ongoing projects have reached both the city centre and rural districts, including satellite communities like Abaji, Kuje, and Kwali.
Guaranteeing Peaceful Area Council Elections
Recognizing the political sensitivity of the year, Wike directly addressed the Area Council elections scheduled to hold within weeks. He gave residents a firm assurance that his administration is committed to a credible and peaceful electoral process.
"The FCT Administration is committed to ensuring that the exercise is conducted in a free and fair atmosphere devoid of violence and illegalities," the Minister declared. He urged all eligible voters in the six area councils to participate actively and make informed choices at the polls.
Looking further ahead to the 2027 general elections, Wike acknowledged that Abuja, as the nation's seat of power, will become a hub for political activities as campaigns commence later in the year. He pledged that the FCT Administration would maintain law and order, providing a conducive environment for all political actors to operate peacefully.
Collective Responsibility for a Stable Capital
Beyond government action, Minister Wike called on all residents of the Federal Capital Territory to play their part. He stressed the importance of discipline, diligence, and respect for the law as the foundation for sustaining development and stability in the capital.
