The Edo State House of Assembly has elected Yekini Idiaye, the lawmaker representing Akoko Edo Constituency I, as its new speaker. The election took place during plenary on August 17, following the formal resignation of the former speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, which was acknowledged by the House.
Resignation and Nomination Process
The sitting, presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Osamwonye Atu, began with the announcement of Agbebaku’s resignation letter. Following this, Sunday Ojiezele, the member representing Esan South East Constituency, nominated Idiaye for the position of Speaker. The nomination was seconded by Eric Okaka, the member representing Owan East Constituency.
Oath of Office and Assumption of Leadership
The Clerk of the House subsequently administered the oath of office on Idiaye, who then assumed the leadership of the House. The transition marks a new chapter for the Edo State legislature.
Drama During the Sitting
The session witnessed a mild drama concerning the position of the member representing Owan West Constituency. However, the situation was quickly brought under control, allowing the proceedings to continue smoothly.
Idiaye’s emergence as speaker comes at a critical time for the state, and his leadership will be closely watched as the House continues its legislative duties.
