The 2027 presidential election will not mirror the 2023 contest, according to political analyst Omotayo Yusuf, who asserts that President Bola Tinubu's incumbency provides him with a structural advantage over former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. In an exclusive interview with Legit.ng, Yusuf explained that the dynamics have shifted, making Atiku's path to the presidency significantly more challenging.
Different Dynamics in 2027
Yusuf highlighted that while the 2023 election featured a three-way race among Atiku, Tinubu, and Labour Party's Peter Obi, the upcoming election introduces a critical new element: a sitting president seeking re-election. He noted, "I think the next general election or the next presidential election is unique in the sense that while some or many might think it's following the same trajectory of 2023, where we had the triumvirate of Atiku, Peter Obi, and Bola Tinubu running for election, the dynamics are slightly different this time, where we have an incumbent running against Atiku and Peter Obi."
This shift means Atiku is no longer competing against a fellow challenger but against a president who commands the full resources and machinery of the state. According to Yusuf, Nigeria's political system has historically favored incumbents, and reversing that advantage requires more than just policy criticism.
Verbal Attacks Insufficient
Acknowledging that Atiku's criticism of the administration serves to hold the government accountable and offer alternative proposals, Yusuf argued that such an approach falls short of what is needed to unseat a sitting president. He stated, "He is not contesting against an individual now, but an incumbent who has the power in his hands and is being asked to relinquish it; whether we like it or not, the system and the Nigerian system favour the incumbent, and it will take a whole lot more than just verbal tirades to upset the president."
Yusuf added that, despite formal campaigns not yet beginning, there is no visible evidence that Atiku currently possesses the political firepower to effectively challenge Tinubu. Atiku, who ran under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023, was ratified as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on May 29, 2026, following his resignation from the PDP.
ADC Chieftain Criticises Tinubu
In related news, Kenneth Okonkwo, a chieftain of the ADC, has declared that President Tinubu does not meet the constitutional requirements to serve as Nigeria's president. Okonkwo cited gaps in the educational credentials Tinubu submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). According to published records, Tinubu provided only his university certificate, with no primary or secondary school certificates included.
These developments underscore the intensifying political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 election, with opposition figures like Atiku and Okonkwo seeking to challenge Tinubu's legitimacy and incumbency advantage.
