Enugu 2027: Mbah faces internal revolt as opposition grows

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State is navigating a complex political landscape as he prepares for the 2027 governorship election. What was initially seen as a consolidation of power has evolved into a fierce confrontation with opposition figures, many of whom originate from his own senatorial district. Lawrence Njoku examines the shifting dynamics reshaping the state's politics.

Three major hurdles for Mbah

Mbah faces three critical challenges in his bid for a second term. First, he must rebrand and consolidate the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu after defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which he led to victory in 2023. This task is particularly daunting in a state where the APC has historically struggled for acceptance. Second, he must convince voters that his administration offers a distinct and improved governance trajectory, especially amid the economic strain associated with President Bola Tinubu's reforms. Third, and most significantly, his toughest opposition may come from within his own Enugu East Senatorial Zone, where multiple aspirants have emerged.

Internal opposition from Enugu East

Political undercurrents in Enugu East, particularly among stakeholders in the Nsukka axis, signal potential resistance. Among those linked to the governorship race from Mbah's own zone are former Minister Uche Nnaji, former FCT Permanent Secretary Chinyeaka Ohaa, former Senator Gilbert Nnaji, businessman Sampson Nnamani, and Professor Jehu Onyekwere. These figures are already positioning themselves, raising questions about internal consensus and zoning expectations.

Mbah's strategic shift

Since 2025, Mbah has adjusted his political approach, focusing more on sustaining power. Initially, he prioritized governance over political engagement, avoiding visits to godfathers and restricting access to official functions. This earned him criticism for being distant. However, ahead of 2027, he has softened his style, now tolerating praise singers and allowing support groups to campaign for his re-election. He also defected to the APC, weakening a growing opposition structure that Uche Nnaji had been building within the party.

Consolidation and endorsements

Mbah has consolidated his hold on the APC, ensuring loyalists occupy key positions during recent congresses. He extended his influence regionally by supporting Dr Ben Nwoye for a southern party leadership role. Endorsement rallies have followed: the Awkunanaw Clan, Enugu West, and Enugu North Senatorial Zones have all publicly backed him, with Enugu North even raising N102 million for his nomination form. An endorsement from Enugu East is pending.

Uncertainty and opposition moves

Despite these endorsements, Mbah appears unsettled. He recently led elders to President Tinubu to secure support. Meanwhile, opposition figures are mobilizing. Uche Nnaji, who finished fourth in 2023, is rallying aggrieved APC members and has promised a single term if elected. Chinyeaka Ohaa resigned as ESUT Governing Council Chairman and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Gilbert Nnaji also aligned with ADC. Sampson Nnamani has criticized Mbah's performance, and Jehu Onyekwere has re-entered the race.

Controversial policies and legal challenges

To address public concerns, Mbah reduced land charges and suspended daily levies on petty traders. However, his administration introduced a mandatory N150 million advertising permit fee for political parties and candidates, which opponents call exclusionary. Lawyer Ben Okolo has challenged this policy in court. Additionally, the state government cancelled Uche Nnaji's planned medical outreach in Udenu, insisting he obtain clearance.

Mixed public sentiment

Residents express mixed feelings. While some acknowledge ongoing infrastructure projects, others feel the strain of economic pressures and have yet to see direct benefits. The political mood remains cautious, with high expectations. The PDP Zonal Chairman for the South-East, Ray Nnaji, insists the election will be a test case for performance and acceptability. As the 2027 election approaches, Mbah appears determined to use every available tool to secure his re-election, but the growing opposition from within his zone and beyond suggests a fiercely contested race ahead.
