Former President Goodluck Jonathan has indicated he is considering a return to the presidential race in 2027, but stressed that he will consult widely before making any decision. Speaking during a public engagement with young Nigerians, Jonathan emphasized the importance of patriotism, youth participation, and credible elections.
Jonathan on Presidential Ambition
Responding to growing political conversations about his possible candidacy, Jonathan said: "Presidential race is not a computer game. But I’ve heard you, and I’ll consult widely." He thanked the youths for their interest in Nigeria, noting that only patriotic citizens build their country.
Call for Youth Engagement
Jonathan urged young Nigerians to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and actively participate in elections. He warned that Nigeria has one of the lowest voter turnout rates globally and suffers from high voter apathy. "Nigeria has the lowest turnout of elections in every election cycle. We have the highest voter apathy," he said.
He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to investigate the causes of low voter turnout and find ways to boost civic engagement, particularly among the youth.
Emphasis on Peaceful Elections
The former president stressed that peaceful and credible elections are essential for national stability. He warned that violence or electoral manipulation could discourage good citizens from participating in politics. "The key thing in this country is peace," he added, urging youths to advocate for peaceful elections and remain engaged in democratic processes.
Jonathan, who served as Nigeria's president from 2010 to 2015, made these remarks amid renewed speculation about his role in the 2027 presidential race, though he has not formally declared his intention to contest.
