The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has suspended its National President, Prof. Bala Audu, along with the leader of the National Officers Committee (NOC), for violating and disregarding the association's constitution. The suspension was announced during the NMA's Emergency Delegates Meeting (EDM), which was attended by 63 members, including chairmen and secretaries from 23 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Reasons for Suspension
Members accused the Audu-led administration of illegally disqualifying six members from contesting various positions in the association's national election, scheduled to be held at the NMA Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Kano from April 27 to May 3. According to sources, the Audu-led executive and the NOC disqualified the six aspirants on the grounds that they submitted incomplete documents.
Caretaker Committee Formed
In response, a caretaker committee led by former Secretary-General Dr. Ekpe Phillips was constituted during the meeting. The committee will manage the association's affairs until after the election and will ensure that the Audu-led NOC faces the disciplinary committee. If found guilty, the NOC members will be sanctioned accordingly.
Reversal of Disqualifications
Meeting attendees unanimously voted to reverse the disqualification of the six candidates. The session was moderated by Dr. Omotayo Adetunji and Dr. Fernandez Akinnagbe, who were nominated as Chairman and Secretary before the EDM commenced.
Support from NMA-FCT Chairman
Chairman of the NMA-FCT, Dr. Emeka Ayogu, supported the decision, stating that members had no choice but to take drastic action after all efforts to broker peace had failed.
Criticism from Former Deputy Secretary-General
Former Deputy Secretary-General of NMA, Dr. Umezurike Ikechukwu, criticized the Audu-led administration for failing to heed members' appeals regarding the disqualified candidates.
