The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, has stated that the party's presidential primary exercise demonstrates the resilience and functionality of democracy in Nigeria. Speaking at the official collation and declaration event held at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, Mark emphasized that the gathering was more than just the announcement of a presidential candidate; it was a historic moment intended to send a powerful message to Nigeria and its citizens.
Democracy in Action
Mark explained that the exercise was designed to prove that democracy can still function effectively. He stressed that political competition does not have to devolve into political warfare, and that political parties can be built around principles rather than personalities. According to him, the event also demonstrates that even in a season of national anxiety, a brighter democratic future remains possible. He underscored the significance of the gathering, noting that history will remember what was accomplished at the collation and declaration event.
Appreciation for Party Members
The ADC chairman expressed deep appreciation to members of the African Democratic Congress for their steadfastness, patience, sacrifices, understanding, and faith in the party despite significant challenges. He recalled that many had once predicted confusion, division, or collapse for the party. Instead, he noted, the party remained firm, and its members kept faith with the ADC, which today stands stronger, taller, and more united than ever before.
Commendation for Committees
Mark also commended the Presidential Screening Committee and the Presidential Primary Election Committee for their patriotism, diligence, professionalism, and commitment to transparency. He acknowledged that they worked under logistical challenges, pressure, and national attention, and their efforts strengthened the credibility of the exercise and reinforced public confidence in the party.
Praise for Aspirants
Mark further praised the party's three presidential aspirants: former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and former Chairman of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group Mohammed Hayatu-Deen. He described them as central to the uniqueness of the ADC, noting that the party stands out as the only one with three strong aspirants contesting its presidential ticket. This, he said, reflects the party's deep commitment to democratic practice. According to him, the participation of the aspirants demonstrates loyalty to the party, courage to compete, and faith in democratic ideals. By subjecting themselves to the process, they did not merely contest an election but strengthened democracy itself, despite efforts in some quarters to create uncertainty and tension.
