The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has taken decisive action against one of its prominent members, expelling Representative Leke Abejide from the party in a major political move ahead of the 2027 general elections.
National Working Committee Ratifies Expulsion
The ADC's National Working Committee (NWC) officially ratified the decision to remove Abejide, who represents Yagba federal constituency in the House of Representatives, during a crucial meeting held at the party's national headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, November 27. The decision follows earlier disciplinary actions taken by the party's Kogi state executive committee against the lawmaker.
According to a statement released by Bolaji Abdullahi, the party's national spokesperson, the expulsion comes as a result of various alleged acts of indiscipline by Abejide. The party leadership emphasized its commitment to maintaining discipline and integrity among its members.
Party's Strong Stance Against Indiscipline
The ADC made it clear that it will not tolerate any form of misconduct from its members as it positions itself to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 presidential election. The party's official statement reaffirmed this position, stating: "The party reaffirmed that it would not tolerate any acts of indiscipline from its members as it seeks to build a party governed by discipline, character, and integrity."
This expulsion marks the culmination of a disciplinary process that began in August when the ADC's State Working Committee in Kogi state initially suspended Abejide along with four other party members. The suspended members had been directed to appear before the NWC for further hearings, which ultimately led to Abejide's expulsion.
Abejide's Controversial Support for Tinubu
The political rift between Abejide and his party became apparent when the lawmaker publicly expressed support for President Bola Tinubu. During an August interview on The Mic on Show podcast, Abejide explained his position, stating that he supported President Tinubu because he did not want his people to "waste their votes."
Following his initial suspension in August, Abejide had issued a statement asserting that he remained a member of what he called the "original ADC" in Kogi state and at the federal level, distancing himself from what he described as the "Kangaroo Coalition ADC" with intentions to seize control of the party.
The ADC has also directed its state leadership to ensure that all vacant positions at ward, local government, and state executive levels are filled according to approved transition guidelines. This reorganization is expected to precede party congresses, whose timeline will be announced soon.
This development occurs as the ADC positions itself as a serious contender in the 2027 elections. Earlier statements from party officials, including Senator Nazif Gamawa, the national vice chairman, expressed confidence that the party can win the presidential election even without serving governors, citing the example of former President Muhammadu Buhari's victory without gubernatorial support.
