Another Federal Lawmaker Leaves PDP, Joins APM

Honourable Aliyu Misau, a member of the House of Representatives representing the Misau/Dambam Federal Constituency of Bauchi State, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the Allied Peoples Movement (APM). The lawmaker cited the protracted leadership crisis within the PDP as the primary reason for his defection.

Defection Deepens PDP Crisis in Bauchi

Misau's departure further highlights the declining influence of the PDP in Bauchi State. This move comes shortly after four other PDP lawmakers from the state defected to the APM, along with the recent exit of Governor Bala Mohammed from the PDP to the same party.

Letter of Defection

The defection was formalized through a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas. During plenary on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, the letter was read by Abba. In the letter, Misau expressed gratitude to the PDP for the opportunity to serve but emphasized that the ongoing leadership crisis made it impossible to continue effectively representing his constituency.

Misau stated, "I would like to thank the PDP for the opportunity given to me to serve the good people of Misau/Dambam Federal Constituency. The leadership crisis in the PDP has made it impossible for me to continue to represent my people and contribute to the development of the constituency."

Growing Exodus from PDP

Misau's defection is part of a larger trend of political figures leaving the PDP. Several political office holders and party loyalists have either joined the APM or signaled their intention to do so since Governor Bala Mohammed's move. The APM continues to strengthen its foothold with the influx of key figures from the PDP.

Other Recent Defections

In related developments, the Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, also left the PDP for the All Progressives Congress (APC), resigning his leadership position. Additionally, six Oyo lawmakers transitioned from the PDP to the APM, reshaping the dynamics in the House of Representatives. Cross-party movements have surged, with significant defections strengthening the opposition's presence.

Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, a former Kano state governor, also resigned from the PDP, citing strategic political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections. He noted that his decision followed extensive consultations within his political group.
